There were two parish council by-elections in the Telford Constituency & one in The Wrekin Constituency last Thursday.
Firstly Jack Hudson, our Deputy Chair Political, stood in Dawley Hamlets (Smallhill Road) Parish Council. This is a very small ward of only about 450 voters. Curiously it falls within Dawley Hamlets for the parish, but Lawley for the Borough ward. Jack is one of our approved candidates for Lawley.
A combination of Jack’s personal charm and bespoke literature and GOTV (Get Out The Vote) flyers saw Jack win the seat. This was a hotly contested Labour seat with candidates from Reform, Labour, Green and Lib Dem. It has demonstrated that we can win seats with the right candidate and strategy. This seat was won by doorstep canvassing and personal support. Good luck Councillor Hudson in advocating for your new ward!
Next came the Lightmoor seat on The Gorge Parish Council. Many thanks to Kathryn Banks, a new member and standing as a paper candidate, who still achieved 10% of the vote.
Finally, our friends over in the Wrekin had been all out to retain the seat on Newport Town Council with new candidate, Parwiz Karimi. He worked incredibly hard and was just pipped to the post by veteran LibDem David Ellams.
Congratulations and thanks to all our candidates, but also the teams of supporters and everyone who delivered leaflets, knocked on doors, designed literature, analysed our data, promoted social media posts and supplied the tea and cake.
Local Elections May 2027
These by elections are very much a barometer for the Local Elections in May 2027. What they have shown us is that we can beat Reform (and others). However, the campaigning has already started.
For Priorslee, the latest newspaper is in the process of being delivered and canvassing particularly focussed on the new developments. The Nedge delivered their newspaper in March. Lawley will be next, riding high after Jack’s success.
We are confident that our carefully selected candidates and strategic, targeted literature with time spent personally engaging with voters, we will see success.
